THAIBOXING – KING OF THE RING
Thai boxing (Muay Thai in the Thai language) is known as the world’s most dynamic combat sport thanks to its versatile and intense techniques.
THAI BOXING AS A HOBBY
There is a wide range of techniques applied in Thai boxing, such as different punches and kicks, their dodging and blocking, kick catching, Thai wrestling, knee and elbow technique. A good Thai boxer should have a good muscle shape, fast reflexes and match intelligence.
Thai boxing is suitable for men and women of all ages as well as young people as a combat sport and fitness training. For those, interested in competing, it is also possible to practice it on a competitive level and participate in national and world championships.
TRADITIONAL BATTLE SKILLS
Thai boxing (Muay Thai) has been part of the Thai lifestyle for thousands of years developing into its modern form from the traditional skills used on battlegrounds. In 1930 the government of Thailand changed matches previously held on bare ground without gloves. From now on, strict rules were introduced along with weight classes and matches were moved to a ring. In the past, competitors would compete until one of them would be unable to continue the match. The government of Thailand played a huge role in developing Thai boxing rules and spreading the sport around the world. As a result, the discipline came closer to turning into an Olympic sport. Nowadays, Thai boxing is the national sport of Thailand and plays an important part in Thai cultural history.
THE MATCH
Safety equipment used in Thai boxing competitions depends on the level of the match. Professionals of this sport usually use only groin protection, boxing gloves and mouthguard. Beginners have more protection equipment; in addition to the things mentioned above they also need shin guards, chest guard, elbow guards and head protection. Matches happen on a ring and consist of 3 to 5 rounds (2-3 minutes each) depending on the level of the competition. About 5-10% of Thai boxers are also competing in tournaments.
SUCCESS OF THE FINNS IN THAI BOXING
The Finnish have succeeded in this sport very well and achieved medals even in World Championships on beginner and professional level. Women and men interested to participate in competitions have an opportunity to take part in national or international kickboxing competitions.
RANKING SYSTEM
There is no ranking system in Thai boxing. Students are divided into groups based on the course (basic or advanced). Thai boxing practitioners who participate in competitions are divided into the following classes: A, B and C.
