SUBMISSION WRESTLING COMBINES TECHNIQUE AND PHYSICAL FORCE

Submission wrestling, where the techniques of BJJ, MMA, Sambo and Judo are mixed, is known for its effectiveness.

There is an endless number of different techniques that students can learn and develop in their training. A master of this sport can be a light-weighted wrestler or a large wrestler that can outmatch the other one with his power. In order to be the expert and achieve great results in this sport, training with both lighter and heavier opponents should be taken into account.

Wrestling techniques also play an important part in modern MMA, because quite often match turns into close contact combat and ends up with ground fighting.

SUBMISSION WRESTLING AS A HOBBY

The main goal of submission wrestling is to take control of the opponent while standing or on the ground without punching. Hand and leg lock is used in addition to chokes. The discipline is in many ways similar to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, one of the only differences is that BJJ uniform (gi) is not used. Practitioners of BJJ are often very successful in the professional competitions of submission wrestling. At the same time, also freestyle wrestlers are doing well in this sport.

Submission wrestling as a hobby is suitable for women and men of all ages as well as young people. It is also possible to start practicing it on a competitive level.

ROOTS OF SUBMISSION WRESTLING

Despite the Japanese origins and powerful Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu background, modern submission wrestling was developed remarkably by the biggest federation of this sport in the world, Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC), which spread the sport outside the United Arab Emirates all around the globe. Apart from establishing common rules for submission wrestling, the ADCC, founded in the 1990s, began organising World Championships and continental competitions.

In the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championships, the match lasts for 10 minutes, of which the first 5 minutes opponents compete without scoring. Final men’s match lasts for 20 minutes and the first 10 minutes are without scoring. The winner can claim a prize of up to 40 000 USD.

Since 2006 there have also been competitions in submission wrestling organised under the authority of the International Wrestling Federation (FILA) under name grappling. Matches organised by FILA last for 6 minutes.

Competitors wear shorts along with a tight shirt and are barefoot on the ring. The match is over when one of the opponents is in the situation when he has to surrender and gives a sign by tapping the ground or when a referee sees that the disadvantaged competitor cannot tap the ground without hurting himself. The weight classes for men are 62 kg, 70 kg, 80 kg, 92 kg and 125 kg and for the women 48 kg, 55 kg, 63 kg and 72 kg. Since 2007 grappling has been part of the competition programme of the FILA World Wrestling Games.

The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) also organises annually its own World Championships in Wrestling without gi uniform.
