ESCRIMA – WEAPON COMBAT
FEscrima (fencing) is known as one of the most effective weapon-based martial arts from the Philippines.
ESCRIMA AS A HOBBY
Escrima is suitable for women and men of all ages as a combat sport and fitness training.
The training starts with one rattan stick (50 cm) and eventually advances to two sticks and then to bladed weapons and a staff. The use of weapons of different length and weight is based on the same principles, so it is easy to switch from one weapon to another.
.
HUNDREDS OF YEARS OF TRADITION
Escrima has roots in the Philippines. It is hard to identify the actual origins of Escrima, as it has been developed throughout hundreds and thousands of years by the people of the Philippines in different combat situations. There are hundreds of different styles of Escrima.
Escrima training process starts with the use of one and two sticks as a weapon. This is exceptional in this discipline compared to other combat sports, where weapons come into picture only later in training. It is common to get to know lots of different weapons and learn their use while training. Practitioners get to know sticks of different length and weight, followed by knives, tonfa, shields and so on.
The focus of the training is primarily on finding the right balance and force. The weapons used in Escrima can sometimes be heavy and their handling requires the use of the whole body. The same basic principles can be applied to different fighting styles. Escrima also covers unarmed self-defence against an unarmed or armed opponent.
RANKING SYSTEM
Student ranking system is used in Escrima.
